Cortana Gets An Upgrade And Becomes Smarters Thanks To An Update From Microsoft

The virtual assistant from Microsoft is getting an upgrade which will enable it to identify important dates or deadlines in email messages. Cortana's upgrade is currently rolling out via an update to Windows 10 users and will arrive on the iOS and Android OS platforms in the next few weeks.

Cortana will be able to keep track of deadlines, promises, and other important details. The upgrade to Cortana basically enables the virtual assistant to scan through a user's email messages and keep tabs on tasks, deadlines, and promises made to other people. The virtual assistant sends out a pop-up message to remind you of these things.

However, Cortana just doesn't keep track of one's work as it will also be able to remind you about personal tasks that need getting done such buying tickets, doing the groceries, and whatnot. All of these are made possible by what Microsoft calls machine learning technology.

The technology allows Cortana to recognize commitments and to call them out to make sure that they are not forgotten. With the upgraded Cortana, the Redmond-based tech giant gives the assurance that "nothing slips through the cracks".

In order to use this feature, a user would need to have either an Outlook.com email address or an Office 365 account. Once set-up, one just needs to launch Cortana and to open the Notebook view. From there, a user would need to access Connected Services to connect either an Outlook.com account or Office 365 account.

The recent update to Cortana is in line with the company's goal of expanding and improving its virtual assistant. Microsoft also plans to set up Cortana for use in cars later this year and has even begun working with Nissan and BMW to have its software integrated into their vehicles.

Other features of Cortana include turning off a computer with a voice command through a smartphone as well as be able to restart, lock, and put their PCs to sleep. Users will also be able to control the system's volume.
