La La Land Is One Step Closer To an Oscar After Damien Chazelle’s DGA Award Win

Beating out a crowded category, La La Land director, Damien Chazelle is the youngest ever awardee of the Directors Guild of America Awards. This is just hinting that the director is so close to an Oscar win on February 26th.

CBC reported that Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, the stars of La la Land, presented Chazelle with the directing medallion at the Directors Guild of America Awards. La La Land is a 2016 American romantic musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. It is a story about a musician and inspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles. The title refers to both the city and the idiom for being out of touch with reality. Emma Stone plays Mia the struggling actress, while Ryan Gosling plays Sebastian, a jazz pianist who makes a living by playing cocktail party gigs.

La La Land was shot in 40 days using 35mm film, 93 locations, and 1600 extras. The crowded category consisted of Barry Jenkins director of Moonlight, Kennet Lonergan director of Manchester by the Sea, Garth Davis director of Lion and Denis Villeneuve director of Arrival.

Nate Parker was nominated for the first time feature award for the Birth of the Nation. Ezra Edelman won the documentary award for O.J.: Made in America. Some of the other winners were Steven Zaillian for The Night Of, Tina Mabry for An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win, Miguel Sapochnik for Game of Thrones and Becky Martin for Veep.

Vulture has reported that La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations. La La Land has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling and his co-star Emma Stone are expected to win their categories for Best Actor and Best Actress.
