Peter Parker Death: Spiderman Faces Doctor Octopus For The Last Time In No. 700 Comic

The latest issue of "Amazing Spider-Man" was released this week and the outcome isn't pretty. Writer Dan Slott decided it was time to shake things up with the series, though no one could have ever imagined the way issue number 700 would end.

"When we first met Peter Parker, he was a teenage bespectacled nerd who resented all the other kids," said Slott to CNN. "One of his first lines was, "Some day I'll show them all! Some day they'll be sorry they ever laughed at me." That's not something a hero would say. If Peter had never learned the lesson of "great power and great responsibility," there's every chance he would have become a supervillain.

Spoiler alert, if you don't want to know the ending until picking up a copy of the latest issue, stop reading now.

"This is an epic turn. I've been writing Spider-Man for 70-plus issues. Every now and then, you have to shake it up," said Slott to CNN. "The reason Spider-Man is one of the longest running characters is they always find a way to keep it fresh. Something to shake up the mix."

Parker reportedly dies at the end of the comic at the hands of Doctor Octopus, who mind-swaps with Parker, trapping him inside of Doctor Octopus's body. Doc Oc is forced to keep some of Parker's good qualities, and decides he's not only going to try being Spiderman but he's "going to try to be the best Spider-Man ever."

This will be the end of the "Amazing Spider-Man" series, and the new series "Superior Spider-Man" will be on sale Jan. 9 according to CNN.

Marvel Editor Stephen Wacker said that while Parker's death will annoy a lot of fans and will change the face of the Spider-Man series, Parker will still be an "influential role" in the new series as well.

"(Parker's) life is still important to the book because it affects everything that Doctor Octopus does as Spider-Man," said Wacker to CNN. "Because Doctor Octopus knows all of (Parker's memories and) will make decisions on what he saw Peter going through. In a way, he gets the ultimate victory as he becomes a better hero."
