Hyundai Motor Co. revealed this week that they will be recalling around 13,500 2012 Veloster vehicles due to issues with the sunroof according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The recall is due to the fact that sunroofs may shatter while the car is in drive, and could cause the glass panel to break while a driver is using the vehicle. The issue could have occured during production of the vehicle last year, and Hyundai is currently looking into the problem to make sure it doesn't keep happening.
Hyundai sold approximately 32,886 Veloster models in the first 11 months of 2012 according to Autodata Corp.
The recall affects Veloster models produced on Nov. 1, 2011 through April 17 of this year. The three-door compact vehicle is manufactured at a Hyundai factory located in South Korea.
The NHTSA reported that they have received at least 11 complaints from Veloster customers since the car was released regarding the sunroof issue. Seven of those complaints have reported that while driving the vehicle glass shattered above them from the sunroof.
No injuries or crashes have been reported yet according to Reuters.
The recall will go into affect starting in January, and Hyundai will start sending out letters to Veloster customers who should bring their vehicles into nearby dealerships to be inspected. Any sunroofs that need to be replaced will be completed free of charge.
