The Silicon Valley is not taking things lightly. Prominent Tech companies like Google, Apple, Airbnb, Viber, Land Lyft are joining other American companies like Uber and Starbucks in helping stranded immigrants and refugees who are affected by the Travel Ban signed by President Donald Trump.
This happened a few days after President Donald Trump signed and announced the executive order that apparently bans the entry of immigrants and refugees from several countries namely Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. These major tech companies stepped in to help those who are caught stranded in airports and in transit. Call against the Travel ban are all over the news, and making headlines in social media and broadsheets.
According to CNN Tech, Google made a $4 million crisis fund to help organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Immigrant Legal Resouce Center, International Rescue Committee and United Nation High Commission for Refugees. The fund was donated by employees and from company executives.
Also, joining in is Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky who is offering housing assistance to immigrants and refugees who is affected by the travel ban. They are willing to provide free housing to those who were denied entry to the US and is currently not in their home country.
Uber CEO Travis Kalanick created a $3 million assistance fund to his staff who are affected by the travel ban. Lyft co-founders Logan Green and John Zimmer made a pledge to donated in the next for years a sum of $1 million to ACLU in its fight to uphold the constitution.
Even Starbucks, an American coffee giant promised to hire 10000 refugees in a span of 5 years as they partake in community efforts. The CEO Howard Schultz also promised to help all of their affected workers.
The question is, will the Trump Administration heed the call of these companies to immediately stop the travel ban or will it continue with it until it expires after 90 days? What will be the White House next plan?
