Mercedes-Benz's GL Class SUV got a makeover and a new name. Say hello to the 2017 GLS Class SUV with the "S" standing for S Class.
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS. The new GLS Class SUV is designed to provide the state-of-the-art experience of S-Class vehicles into GL-Class vehicles. Although it is not exactly perfect, the German car manufacturer is still successful in incorporating high-end technology and luxury into the GLS-Class.
The exterior of this luxury SUV has changed subtly. The updates are still noticeable with the new bumper, headlights, and grille. Along with its sides are lines that have been rounded off and appear much softer.
This luxury SUV sports three rows worth of spacious seating and its interior sports technology and luxury features borrowed from the S-Class. Interior equipment includes a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a rearview camera, power driver seat with memory settings, and an updated instrument panel and center console. The media display screen is standard at 7 inches and optional at 8 with the COMAND infotainment system, a TV tuner, DVD player, and rear seat display screen.
Safety and driver assist features of the GLS Class include Collision Prevention Assist, Attention Assist, Crosswind Assist, Pre-Safe System, and Brake Assist. Also included is the 4ETS electronic all-wheel drive traction system. The Pre-Safe brakes have pedestrian detection, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and Cross-Traffic Assist.
The GLS will come in four trims each with a different engine. The GLS 450 has a 362-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine, the GLS 550 with a 449-horsepower twin-turbo V8, and the GLS 350d with a 225-horsepower turbocharged V6. The GLS 63 AMG sports a 577-horsepower engine. Except for the 63 AMG, all trims' engines are paired with the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission.
The GLS's steering is very light for an SUV. Although it a delivers a smooth and comfortable ride, its steering lacks razor precision, weight, and responsiveness requiring a lot of focus and concentration on the road. This Mercedes-Benz SUV's retail price ranges from US$67,500 to $124,100 depending on the trim.
