Elon Musk, the billionaire and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is dead serious about digging a tunnel underneath LA to avoid traffic. He pointed out his plans on Twitter and said that he plans to dig starting next month.
Musk did take his Tweet seriously, and that according to him, his plans are taking shape. He, in fact, posted another Tweet updating his millions of followers: "Exciting progress on the tunnel front. Plan to start digging in a month or so."
However, Business Insider reported that an unnamed spokesperson from the Permit Division of LA City noted: "Any such permit application for a tunnel beneath the Public Right of Way would require City Council approval per Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 62.02(a)." The report furthered that the there was no contact between Elon Musk and the California Department of Transportation in regards to boring a tunnel. Such a project would indeed require a number of permits from various local departments.
Meanwhile, according to CNET, Elon Musk could simply put in a couple of calls and favors to lobby or get permissions for his tunneling project. Musk and President Donal Trump are said to be in a good relationship. The Tesla CEO has met the US President on two occasions: one when Musk was invited to the tech leader roundtable and second when he went to the White House along with other executives.
Plus, making the tunnel plan into a reality would require a massive amount of labor to finish. Thus, this could become political leverage as President Trump intends to fulfill his promise to the American people during the election to have more jobs in America. This seems to look good for either party.
CEO Elon Musk first tweeted about the traffic situation and plans for a tunnel last December when he was stuck in traffic. Further, the tunnel would start at his desk at SpaceX, will continue to Crenshaw, until the Interstate 105.
Whether or not Elon Musk's tunnel will push through, we will know more in the coming month. The CEO noted that digging will commence in a month's time.
