A new breed of compact electric cars is brewing as the German carmaker Volkswagen has revealed plans for the VW Golf successor. The self-driving fully electric hatchback is set to debut by 2020, aptly dubbed the I.D.
During the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Vice President for VW Product Line G4 Christian Senger hinted that a new line of compact electric cars will soon be unveiled. "Today we are really successful in having a range of performance, especially at Volkswagen, we need to recreate this with e-mobility," said Senger as reported by Express UK. The I.D. Buzz stole the show during the CES 2017.
This new range of compact electric cars could possibly wear the GTI badge and will likely be parallel to VW's popular Golf. However, compared with the Golf, the VW I.D. GTI will be emission-free. They will likely be based on the Modular Electric Drive Kit that makes use of a flat-floor battery in order to accommodate more space inside the vehicle.
Powering the new line of compact electric cars will be batteries and a 125kw electric motor. Its driving range could be around 400 to 600 km.
The company claims that the VW I.D. GTI could accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in under "8 seconds." When it comes to the sporty model of the compact electric car I.D., it could possibly get close to Golf's a 0-100km/h 6.5. seconds.
The VW I.D. GTI comes with a Volkswagen User I.D., allowing drivers to create and customize their profile and the vehicle will remember their preferences such as temperature, ambient lighting, and seat position. This User I.D. can also be used for newly bought VW I.D. lineup or rental for a more personalized experience.
Other significant additions to the VW I.D. GTI are eye tracking, VW Digital Cockpit, and AR Head-up display.
The compact electric cars are scheduled for a 2020 launch, according to Digital Trends. The fully autonomous models of the VW I.D. GTI will have a 2025 release utilizing the I.D. Pilot. The company is expecting to have sold 1 million EV by 2025.
The new fleet of futuristic compact electric cars is the company's way of restoring their public image after the emission snafu. Volkswagen already has a line of sporty electric models minus the GTI badge, Golf GTE and Passat GTE.
