Mazda RX8 Review: Adrenaline Rush for Drift Junkies

The Mazda RX8 was officially discontinued in 2011. It is still a crowd favorite among racing and drifting enthusiasts to date.

Pros and Features. The 2011 RX-8 is a lightweight four-seater coupe that has a pair of rear-hinged access doors (suicide doors). It has amazing balance and a unique engine design that maximizes power from minimum displacement.

The RX-8 is still the only production car that is powered by a rotary engine. This uses a pair of triangular-shaped "rotors" which spin smoothly in one direction. The rotary design allows the car's motor to spool up to 9,000 rpm with relative ease but does not have much power down low.

The drifting car has nimble handling and a very comfortable ride. It has a smooth rotary engine as well as an innovative body style. The car can fit up to four adults and has very impressive feature content.

Cons. The Mazda RX8 has very poor fuel economy. In addition, it was discontinued because it failed to comply with the emissions standards in the European market.

Additionally, it has meager low-end power and acceleration. This car was not built for everyday use. The rotary's overall lack of low-end torque is frustrating in regular traffic. This car needs to scream and be driven fast by a worthy driver.

What's New? The 2011 RX-8 remains unchanged. It is still a beautiful and sporty car perfect for drifting.

Models. The Mazda coupe has three models: Sport, Grand Touring, and R3. The base Sport model features 18-inch wheels, performance tires, cruise control, and full power accessories. Its MT models gain a limited-slip differential and a rear lip spoiler.

The Grand Touring model includes the limited-slip differential and spoiler. It also adds automatic xenon headlights, fog lights, and other comfort and tech upgrades. It even has keyless ignition/entry and a Bluetooth Bose sound system.

The high-performance R3 model is only available with six-speed manual transmission. It has several of the Grand Touring's features but adds a more aggressively tuned suspension, 19-inch wheels, a rear wing spoiler, and Recaro front sport seats.

Verdict. The Mazda RX8 is truly one of a kind. It is a powerful and fast car that has a sporty look and suicide doors to boot! It is not ideal for everyday driving but it is perfect for racing and drifting enthusiasts.
