On Review: 2017 Volvo XC90 T8 Better Than XC90 T6 And BMW X5 xDrive40e eDrive PHEV?

The 2017 Volvo XC90 T8 E-AWD plug-in hybrid was reviewed against its predecessor XC90 T6 and the BMW X5 xDrive40e eDrive PHEV. The test drive gave the new SUV the rating of an outstanding cruiser on the highway and in the city.

The new Volvo was found to accelerate better than the BMW X5 xDrive40e eDrive PHEV. The former made a smooth and fast acceleration speed of 0-60-mph time of 5.0 seconds. This figure hints that the new Volvo is about 1.2 seconds better than the BMW rival. It also shows that the new XC90 T8 is about 1.6 seconds faster than the previous XC90 T6.

With regard to the figure-eight course, the XC90 T8 equaled the new BMW eDrive which performed a 26.5-second lap time. Heaps of body lean through the corners were experienced during the test drive and it was noted that the braking capacity has room for improvement. It required 115 feet to take a halt at 60 mph. This figure shows that the new Volvo was 4 feet better than the BMW eDrive and 6 feet better than the XC90 T6.

The seven-seater SUV sports a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter 1-4 which can do 313 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. This makes the new Volvo 3 hp less than its processor XC90 T6.

Unlike the previous XC90 T6 which sports the conventional all-wheel drive system, the new XC90 T8 has an eight-speed automatic engine which controls only the wheels on the front. Whereas, the rear wheels are being driven by the electric motor at the rear axle which makes 87 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque.

A 9.2-kW-hr lithium-ion battery pack gives power to the motor of the new XC90 T8 which can run 14 miles in zero-emissions electric mode. The battery can be recharged after 2.5 hours when dipped into a Level 2 plug, Motor trend reported.

Meanwhile, the XC90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription has earned the Premium SUV of the Year award from the highly acclaimed motoring site, Cars.co.za on Jan. 19. This recognition marks the second consecutive award for XC90 as the previous XC90 D5 Inscription was also granted the same recognition last year, News24 has cited.
