Tesla Will Have 'Major' Car Revisions Almost Every Year

Tesla will not stop innovating on their cars instead, they will bring new changes as they will start making revision almost every year. This way Tesla will significantly improve their cars because now they will get the chance to see what works good and what doesn’t.

According to Electrek, Tesla is not using the same model cycle per year as most carmakers which can result in some difficulties for customers who are trying to time their order on the latest features. Despite some customers complaining, Tesla has no plan to conform to the industry standard. The biggest complaint is the lack of retrofits when the carmaker Tesla introduces new hardware upgrades.

Tesla moved away from the practice with making the upgrade to a P100D battery pack available but this didn’t make a permanent change in their feature introduction strategy. Shortly after that, the carmaker Tesla launched the second generation Autopilot, but the retrofit wasn’t available. For this issue, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk said Tesla will never stop innovating and they are planning to introduce a major revision on every 12 to 18 months. Elon Musk also said that Tesla is launching about 20 engineering changes to the Model S every week to improve the vehicle as well as its production.

The revision is similar to the product cycles of mobile devices, according to Tech Times. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla said that this initiative will require stripping the entire vehicle and it will be replaced by approximately 300 components. This will be the most extreme scenario. Last summer, the company upgraded the Tesla Roadster with a better battery pack which improved its range dramatically.

Tesla has already noted the expensive amount of entailed in the process. The reason for the high cost is because the Model S has almost entirely hand-built, low volume nature of Roadster battery packs. Elon Musk also said that this entire process can harm Tesla’s potential to innovate but once a new technology is developed the company will need to reproduce so it is compatible in the older vehicle models.
