Facebook's Fight for Fake News Spreads to Germany

With the access to the internet to most of the people in the world, it comes with responsible use for it. In today's age, it's hard to believe with what people see in social media are true. Now, various organizations and agencies are helping to fight the spread of fake news to the public.

Facebook is one of the agencies that now fights the spread of fake news in their social media platform. For the first time, the company will be taking the fight to the German shores. According to Facebook's blog post, they'll be rolling out updates for the public "in the coming weeks." Facebook's VP for News Feed, Adam Mosseri, explained that the company is currently fighting the spread of fake news on the platform.

The reason for Facebook's strict regulations when it comes to news sharing in their platform can be traced back during the US presidential elections last November 2016. Netizens have been blaming the social media platform for the lack of action from spreading fake information in its News Feed. There is also the issue of fake information with a Syrian refugee who took a selfie with the current Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel. Because of these issues, Facebook now aims to cleanse their Feed of irrelevant and fake news. In a statement from Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook now has "a greater responsibility than just building technology that information flows through," following from his previous statement that Facebook is not a media firm but a technology company.

The Germans will be having their election soon, which is why Facebook is eyeing Germany as their next target. It looks like Facebook took into consideration the complaints and statements they received from the Americans during the US presidential elections over the spread of fake news. "We will learn from these tests in Germany and will further improve and expand our tools over time."
