Ford is going hybrid. Ford just announced that by 2020, they will be launching a hybrid version of their most famous and iconic cars such as a hybrid Ford Mustang and a hybrid F-150.
Mark Fields, Ford's CEO, confirmed in a press conference that was held at the automaker's Flat Rock, Mich., that they have already started building the hybrid Mustang. He also added that a 300 mile all-electric SUV and a hybrid F-150 will debut along with the hybrid Mustang in 2020.
The hybrid Mustang will be equipped with a dual-power setup that can produce V8 power and even more low-end torque. F-150 hybrid will hit production in 2020 which can also be used as a mobile generator on a job site. Ford promises that the F-150 hybrid will provide excellent towing and payload capacity.
Furthermore, Ford announced that they will build "a high-volume autonomous vehicle designed for commercial ride-hailing or ride sharing," that is set to debut in 2021 such as hybrid, pursuit-rated police vehicles and a plug-in Transit Custom that will be sold to the European market.
Both the hybrid Mustang and the hybrid F-150 are due out by 2020, which are currently built in Dearborn and Flat Rock. Ford hasn't yet given any detail on what sort of gasoline engine the hybrid Mustang would have.
Ford will not only build hybrid Mustang's and F-150, they also confirmed that they will also build hybrid vehicles for police departments. Ford is currently selling police versions of the Ford Taurus sedan and Ford Explorer SUV to the police departments across the nation.
Ford's plans to produce more hybrids and electric vehicles come even as gas prices remain very low. Brad Korner, general manager of AIS Rebates said; "It's a leap of faith, as current sales of electrified vehicles are terrible." "In the market today, hybrids and electrics are among the industry's most incentivized." Fields predicted that EV's and hybrid cars would definitely outsell the gasoline powered cars in the next 15 years.
