Self-Driving Cars & Autonomous Technologies Are Wowing Audiences At CES 2017

The 2017 edition of Consumer Electronics Show is not all about Amazon Alexa and AMD Ryzen. Self-driving cars are making head turns and have attracted crowds. The frenzy over autonomous vehicles is palpable. CES 2017 has become an indicator of the growing interest in self-driving car technology.

Faraday Future's FF 91 electric car wowed audiences after its debut two days ago. The four-door passenger vehicle boasts of 1,000 horsepower. When pitted against Tesla Model S, the FF 91 clocked faster in terms of acceleration.

The FF 91 will be marketed by Faraday Future as an ultra-luxury with the price of a premium sedan. Company executives plan to start the main production in 2018. The demo for the FF 91's 0-60 miles per hour capability made headlines the day after.

Tech companies Nvidia, Intel, and Harman are collaborating with automakers such as Audi, BMW, and Volvo to tap the potential of self-driving cars. CES 2017 is populated with self-driving car booths to deliver one message - driving can be safe, thanks to new technology.

A 2017 Audi Q5 SUV was road-tested by reporters present at CES 2017. Equipped with a self-driving system, the car has sensors made by Mobileye and chips from Intel. The Kaby Lake maker believes that the potential for zero accidents and mobility is possible.

Meanwhile, AT&T is collaborating with Delphi and Ford to improve vehicle communication with other cars and infrastructure. The telecoms provider is investing in a self-driving center, in partnership with the American Center for Mobility.

Intel competitor Nvidia signed a contract with Germany's ZF Group to supply car-computing platform powered by its chips. Nvidia's technology offers machine learning and artificial capabilities.

A CES 2017 panel will be hosted by CNET on today to discuss the implications of self-driving technologies on the automotive industry. Those in Las Vegas are invited to attend the panel, which is scheduled in North Hall, Room 258 of the Los Angeles Convention Center.
