39,000 Land Rover, Jaguar Vehicles May Have Rollaway Issues, Says NHTSA

Roughly 39,000 cars are currently being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after seven instances of rollaways were reported to a unit of the agency, the Office of Defect Investigation. The models in question are Land Rover Evoque sport-utility vehicles (SUVs), made between 2012 and 2014, and Jaguar XF sedans made in 2013.

The NHTSA is looking into these Land Rover and Jaguar XF models after reports cited instances of consumer injuries brought about after the cars started to roll away despite being parked, according to Bloomberg. The NHTSA confirmed that a preliminary investigation had been prompted by the Office of Defect Investigation on Dec. 16.

Four of the seven injuries happened because the driver's door had not been properly closed before the cars began to roll away. Another of the injuries reported was due to an individual being trapped between the supposedly defective car and a garage wall.

According to the motorists who filed the reports to the Office of Defect Investigation, the transmissions on the Land Rover SUVs and Jaguar FX sedans were shifted to park when the accidents occurred. The parking brake had, however, not been in use when the injuries were sustained, according to the NHTSA report.

The Land Rover Evoque SUV has a base price of $42,000. The Jaguar XF sedans, meanwhile, go for roughly $52,000 or more. The Jaguar Land Rover is under Tata Motors Ltd.

According to Motor1, the issue of parked cars rolling away has also plagued other models, like the 2013 to 2017 Ram 1500 and 2014 to 2016 Dodge Durango. The problem with these two models was even more severe than the Land Rover SUV and Jaguar FX issue, as 43 complaints were lodged to the NHTSA and one millions cars were effectively under investigation. In this case, drivers had also shifted the gear to park and were outside the cars.
