Google announced they will be releasing the Samsung Chromebook for only $250 on Thursday. This would be the lowest price for a new laptop ever sold in the U.S.
Interested customers can start purchasing the device online and at specific retail stores like Best Buy starting on Monday.
"It's the best laptop that's ever been designed at this price," said Sundar Pichai, who oversees Google's Chrome browser, OS and product teams to Wired. "We assume that you have a Windows machine in your home, or maybe a Mac. This isn't built to replace those machines but instead be an additional computer."
The laptop is thinner and weighs just 2.5 pounds, which is lower than any previous Chromebook.
The Chromebook features an 11.6 inch screen and a Samsung Exynos dual-core ARM processor, which has never been featured in a laptop before. The processor is usually used in devices such as tablets or smartphones at most. It also comes with 16 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM.
The device is built to last 6.5 hours without needing to charge it and it boots up in around 10 seconds. It will check for software updates and update the system manually while also providing free virus software, both of which save customers a lot of time.
For two years customers will have 100GB of free Google Drive storage, which means they can store files on Google Cloud instead of on the actual device.
It also offers customers a reliable backup service to store and save important things like videos, documents, music and photos through Google Drive. Google products like Gmail and YouTube are already built-in as well. Combine the price with all the features listed, this is easily the complete package for those who are looking for a laptop but don't want to spend thousands of dollars on one.
"At Google, our goal is services which are used by hundreds of millions of people, gmail, maps, hangouts," said Pichaito to Wired. "This is a big step in the journey for us. From the inception of the project we've had this goal to provide a thin, light computer that is perfect for everyone."
