The rumor that the second-generation Toyota 86 on the way will likely hit the market by 2018 - 2019 is true. Toyota has confirmed it.

According to autocar, "The GT86 is at the stage where it's being decided in the next one," Toyota Motor Europe Executive Vice-President Karl Schlicht said. "Then a chief engineer will be assigned and away we go." Furthermore, he said that the 86 will live on past the current generation and that, "sporty cars go through their phases. It's our intention to continue with that car." After the company has partnered with BMW on the new Supra (which will be replacing BMW's Z4 roadster), according to autoblog, Toyota seems to resurrect in the sports car business.

As for the feature, Schlicht also said that a soft-top version of the GT86 is unlikely as there are many other priorities and that he doesn't think that they have spare capacity for it. Like the key engineering feature of Toyota 86 though, its low-slung Subaru flat four engine is necessary for better handling characteristics to keep the center of gravity low but Schlicht does not confirm Subaru's commitment yet. Both Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ hit the market nearly five years ago - a joint venture.

Although Toyota 86 or GT86, as it is known in Europe, was not able to meet its sales expectations in other parts of the world, the car got a good sales record in Australia.

Today, Toyota hasn't announced specific features and the long-waiting fans can only speculate and hope that their requests be heard but Toyota has a good track record of listening to their customers which brought them to their top position of being the world's largest car company. Further progress on the next-generation Toyota 86 is expected in days to come.
