Good to their promise, Tesla sums up innovation in all forms with the installation of self-driving hardware in all Tesla models, including the $35,000 MODEL. Tesla envisioned a future where vehicles run on autopilot and passengers lounge behind a driverless car with convenience.
This is made possible with a unique set up of camera arsenal inside the Tesla vehicle. Eight cameras are installed inside the car which allows 360-degree visibility. Twelve ultrasonic sensors, a forward-facing radar, and an updated on-board computer hardware process all the data gathered to ensure a safer travel experience minus a human driver.
As divulged by Tesla on its first autopilot hardware, some features are not available and are still undergoing development. Automatic emergency braking, lane holding, collision warning, and active cruise control are not available on cars which are installed with the first generation Tesla software, according to Digital Trends. Despite the updated version of the new Tesla software 8.1 Hardware 2, Tesla took a step back on other important areas which are undergoing major developments which will be addressed in their upcoming monthly updates. The new hardware also lacks lidar sensors, an important feature needed for a fully autonomous car.
Tesla's CEO Elon Musk recently tweeted about updates on Testa software 8.1 which will be updated incrementally each month, just like an application upgrade seen in smartphones. Tesla software 8.1 is an Enhanced Autopilot hardware which ensures that your Tesla will match the changing traffic conditions without requiring driver input, change lanes and transitions from one freeway to another, as well as the ability to self-park. Tesla software 8.1 is also developed for autonomous driving where the car owner can even summon to and from the garage, much like in the sci-fi movies.
The new Tesla software 8.1 is expected to be released this December. By 2017, autonomous vehicles installed with Tesla software will be made available if Tesla passes all the regulatory tests needed, according to Auto Blog.
