Forget the old Nissan Micra. Car enthusiasts used to joke it was a grandmother's car good for a trip to the supermarket. The new Nissan Micra is touted to go against the Ford Fiesta and the Volkswagen Polo because it's going to be marketed in Europe.

The new 2017 Nissan Micra has been given a major makeover totally different from the old one. For one, it's now made in France while the old one was made in India, where cheapness mattered. Nissan's partner Renault provided the production line, particularly in the powertrain. The suspension has been redesigned but in line with all superminis in its class, a strut front and a torsion rear suspension, according to Top Gear.

Nissan has declared that it wants to be the best in its class again. Everything has been redesigned for the European market's supermini taste with an ambience right up there with the VW Polo and Ford Fiesta. It comes in two engine variants: The 0.9-liter, turbo three cylinder petrol engine and the 1.5 diesel, both with five-speed manual gearboxes.

The petrol engine produces 90 brake-horsepower but has an overboost that will take it to 95 brake-horsepower just short of the 6,500 rpm. The diesel engine, while still able to produce 90 brake-horsepower, is heavier but has more torque. Its performance might be small, but its fuel economy advantage is large.

Inside the cabin, you get a two-tone interior and faux leather in the trims. The front space is just about right and you get a pretty neat Bose infotainment system with an option for speakers in the headrest. The only downsides are the manual windows in the rear and a rough baggage compartment, but it's one of the things made to keep its price tag low, Independent has reported.

The price for the Nissan Micra is not yet available as of press time, but looking at the specs, it's a serious contender for both the Polo and the Fiesta and Europe may well be ready to welcome back the Micra again.
