The gold medal - a worldwide symbol of excellence for amateur athletes - will be the goal for Honda and Acura racers from across the country as they travel to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, next week to take part in the Sports Car Club of America National Championship Runoffs.
Each year, SCCA racers from New York to California take part in 70 "national" club racing events to qualify for one final, winner-take-all race in each of 28 classes, known simply as the "Runoffs."
Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the first three finishers in each race, where previous winners have included Bobby Rahal, Paul Newman and Jimmy Vasser.
In addition, Honda and Acura drivers are eligible for contingency awards, offered by Honda Performance Development [HPD] through the Honda Racing Line, of up to $2,500, along with additional support to help offset travel costs for the racers.
Honda Performance Development will also host a catered trackside hospitality tent exclusively for Honda/Acura competitors and their team members.
The tent will offer a buffet lunch from Tuesday through Saturday 22, at which a monitor will show a live feed of on-track activities.
Drivers to watch this year include defending H Production Champion Greg Gauper, returning with his Honda Civic in search of a second consecutive title; and defending Formula F Champion Tim Kautz, now running with Honda power in his Piper open-wheel racer.
In addition to the 28 championship categories, two new SCCA classes will be on display at this year's runoffs: B-Spec, an entry-level racing class featuring the Honda Fit; and Super Touring Light, a mid-level preparation category that includes both Honda and Acura models.
Launched in July 2009, the Honda Racing Line is a program targeted at licensed participants in sanctioned amateur and entry-level professional racing.
