Mercedes-AMG GT To Go Black This 2018 With 'Most Hardcore' Model Yet

Even though Mercedes just dropped the luxury brand's AMG GT R this year, the company is already looking forward to launching a Black Series at some point in 2018. Tobias Moers, AMG boss, told Top Gear during the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show that the "most hardcore" AMG GT model was a distinct possibility, but that it would take time to perfect.

The potential 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT would serve as successor to the SLS AMG Black Series, and an even more powerful upgrade to the 577bhp Mercedes AMG GT R. According to Top Gear, however, Moers is not interested in a hardcore model of which the only selling point would be stellar horsepower. They're still gathering suggestions for the Black Series, he added, which means consumers will need to be patient in the meantime.

According to Motor Authority, a Black Series of an already powerful vehicle would also need to take elements like lighter curb weight, aerodynamic performance and added bodywork into account to do the model justice. Mercedes' E63 AMG also achieves great feats of speed and power at 612hp, adding further pressure onto the future Black Series.

In fact, Motor Authority projects the Black Mercedes-AMG GT would not be able to run on less than 600hp, in addition to its driving dynamics being sufficiently equipped for the racetrack. Moers, on his part, affirmed that merely placing in another aero element to the GT R would not make the cut for the promised hardcore Black Series.

Although Mercedes' existing ideas for a Black Series remained under wraps, Top Gear confirmed that it would be consistent with AMG's penchant for fierce, battle-ready performance with stellar driving dynamics. It added that consumers should pay extra close attention to AMG next year as it observes its golden anniversary: Moers pledged that announcements would commence soon about special edition cars in line with the celebration.
