Dane Cook Jokes About Colorado Shootings, Apologizes

Actor and standup comic Dane Cook incorporated a joke about the fatal movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado into his routine, and quickly apologized for it.

The shootings occurred on the night of July 20 when gunman James Eagan Holmes walked into a showing of Dark Knight Rises and opened fire on the crowd, killing 12 and injuring 58.

Cook evidently didn't care for the movie for latest installment in the Batman series.

During a routine at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles on July 26, the actor weighed in on the movie and the shooting. Unbeknownst to him, a member of the audience recorded his set, and the result quickly found its way online (see it here at the Huffington Post).

The video shows Cook saying the following:

"So I heard that the guy came into the theater about 25 minutes into the movie. Now if you've seen the movie, the movie's pretty much a piece of crap. And, uh - yeah, spoiler alert. And I know that if, you know, none of that had happened, I'm pretty sure that somebody in that theater, about 25 minutes in, realizing it was a piece of crap, probably was  like, 'Oh f*cking shoot me.'"

The audience seemed unsure how to respond, but quickly dissolved into laughter and applause.

Cook posted an apology via his Twitter account on the evening of July 27:

"I am devastated by the recent tragedy in Colorado & did not mean to make light of what happened. I made a bad judgment call with my material last night & regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. My heart goes out to all of the families & friends of the victims."
