Hybrid Sales Up 164 Percent in June

Kelley Blue Book has released a statement saying that sales of dedicated hybrids and alternative-energy vehicles last month soared 164 percent over June of last year. A total of 23,778 were sold.

They are down from March's all-time high, and the industry manual notes that they will probably decrease further with gas prices on the decline. Still, it appears that they will remain high.

Sales of the Lexus CT 200h were especially strong, with an increase over last June of nearly 500 percent.

The Chevrolet Volt's sales were 200 percent higher. Says Kelley: "The Volt, popular for its longer driving range, has outsold the Nissan Leaf nearly 3-to-1 so far this year, even though it has a higher manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) and is not considered a 'true' all-electric from a purists' standpoint. "

In fact, Nissan Leaf sales fell short of June 2011, as did sales of the Honda Insight and Honda CR-Z.

Toyota Prius sales, on the other hand, were 300 percent higher.

Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst of automotive insights for Kelley Blue Book, said in a statement, "The Toyota Prius was the most significant driver of segment gains.....The Prius has been in high demand since the introduction of the subcompact Prius c and wagon-esque Prius v.  Sales numbers for the Prius also look especially strong due to the inventory shortages that plagued Toyota at this time last year."
