F1 News: Robert Kubica Makes Awesome Comeback, Scores Podium Finished In Renault Sport Trophy

After leaving the tracks for six years, F1 drive Robert Kubica enjoyed a successful comeback as he scores a podium third place finish, just six seconds away from winners Raoul Owens and Fredrik Blomstedt in the Renault Sport Trophy at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps last Saturday.

What A Comeback!

Polish Robert Kubica, a former Formula 1 driver of BMW and Renault and winner of the 2008 Canadian GP, announced last week that he would be entering the race. With this he already raced at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying session and then later on finished third for the Renault Sport Trophy last weekend.

Kubica deserves all the praises as he has risen well from an unfortunate incident. After five awesome seasons racing in F1, his stint was cut short after his serious accident in the Andora Rally, which prevented him from starting the 2011 F1 season. The accident resulted into severe injuries that required Kubica to undergo a lengthy rehabilitation before making his comeback, and the recent race result indicates that he is all well now.

"After nearly six years away from road racing, it is good to get back to the podium . In these conditions, it is always difficult to get good times in a car that requires experience and intelligence. The Renault Sport Trophy is still new to the team, but the changes we have made have been good. I had some problems in the race, but I made a good overtaking at the bus stop. we can be happy" said Kubica.

What A Race!

The race got off to a chaotic start as several drivers went wide at La Source. When the action resumed, Fabian Schiller led the pack and other drivers follow quickly. After seeing his partner Cristophe Hamon complete the first 10 laps of the race and suffer contact, Kubica completed the final 17 laps behind the wheel of the Renault R.S.01 car.

A late charge saw Kubica rise from Place 6 and with 10 minutes remaining to cross the line, he placed in third, just six seconds behind race winners Raoul Owens and Fredrik Blomstedt. Watch the race below to see the full details.

Interestingly, Kubica got his last podium finish at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps too in 2010 where he finished third behind Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber. This has brought great memories because he was one of the most promising talents of the past decade.

The next race of the Renault Sport Trophy will end the season in the Portuguese circuit of Estoril. Will we see Kubica behind the wheels again? Nothing is announced but things are getting interesting.
