“Mini Takes America” Coast-to-Coast Road Rally Approaches Finish Line

The fourth annual "Mini Take America" nine-day cross-country rally should be reaching its Los Angeles finish line on July 14.

Anyone eager to celebrate being a Mini driver was eligible to register for the event, which is an organized convoy of Minis that set out on a 3,903-mile journey from Mini headquarters in Woodcliff, New Jersey on July 4.

Drivers could accompany the rally for the entire trip, or on selected legs. Mini expected several thousand participants.

Destination cities, in the order in which they were visited, have been Washington, Charlotte, Nashville, Louisville, Chicago, Des Moines, Lincoln, Boulder, and Albuquerque. Today the convoy travels from Albuquerque to Phoenix, and tomorrow from Phoenix to LA. Closing festivities will be held Sunday.

Parties and festivities were held along the way. The most distinctive scheduled were "Minicross" events to be held at Philadelphia, Nashville, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The event's website describes Minicross as "an awesome, pedal-to-the-metal closed course, staffed by professional drivers" and "your chance to break free from the traffic, red lights and speed limits that confine our daily commute and drive a Mini the way it was meant to be driven".

The name of the rally has special significance this year, as 2012 marks the tenth anniversary of the Mini coming to North America. In that time, the USA has - according to BMW Group, which owns Mini - become the brand's most important sales market.
