Nvidia Brings Compact AI System to Baidu Self-Driving Cars in China

Nvidia has launched a smaller artificial intelligence chip to Baidu's self-driving cars in China. The tech company announced it during the chip conference recently held in the Asian country.

According to Investor's Business Daily, Nvidia has been responsible for the electric car system in different automakers such as Tesla and BMW of North America. However, the latest improvement will help Baidu become more high-powered with the use of the new Drive PX 2 artificial-intelligence platform for "AutoCruise" functions.

Advanced A.I. for Baidu's Cars

As the website noted, this new A.I. innovation allows the electric vehicles to  let vehicles use "deep neural networks to process data from multiple cameras and sensors" and "accelerate production of automated and autonomous vehicles." Meanwhile, Nvdia's VP Liu Jun said in a statement that that new Drive PX 2 would be the first of the upcoming development.

"Baidu and NVIDIA are leveraging our AI skills together to create a cloud-to-car system for self-driving. The new, small form-factor DRIVE PX 2 will be used in Baidu's HD map-based self-driving solution for car manufacturers," he said.

Features

Nvidia's official website revealed the features of the newest A.I. chip. According to the firm, the NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 features a GPU based on the NVIDIA Pascal architecture.

Notably, a single NVIDIA Parker system-on-chip (SoC) configuration can process inputs from multiple cameras, plus LiDAR, radar and ultrasonic sensors. Furthermore, the new invention can also support automotive inputs/outputs, including ethernet, CAN and Flexray. The product will be available soon.

On the other hand, Nvdia and Baidu said in the conference last Sept. 1 that they will be teaming up to produce state-of-the-art electric vehicles and taxis.

"We're going to bring together the technical capabilities and the expertise in AI and the scale of two world-class AI companies to build the self-driving car architecture from end-to-end, from top-to-bottom, from the cloud to the car," Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang stated.
