Nissan recently recalled approximately 134,000 units of its top-selling Nissan Maxima Sedans, Nissan Murano Crossovers and Murano Hybrids after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a statement that the said models cause fires and people should stay away from the vehicles.
The situation seems to be serious as the NHTSA adviced owners to park the vehicle outdoors away from other vehicles, structures and people. The NHTSA also advised owners that they must not try to drive the car at all and should bring it to the nearest Nissan center as early as possible.
Apparently, the fire hazard is caused by the Intelligent Cruise Control features of the affected vehicles, where the anti-lock brake pump can allow brake fluid to leak onto an internal electrical circuit board, resulting in an underhood fire, and possibly even an explosion. Affected models will find their ABS warning light still on for more than 10 seconds after engine startup.
If the scenario above happens, car owners should immediately call Nissan roadside to take away the vehicle. But to be safe, all 2016-2017 Maxima with Intelligent Cruise Control, 2015-2017 Murano with Intelligent Cruise Control and 2015-2016 Murano Hybrid models must be recalled and checked too even if the vehicles don't show the ABS warning light damage.
Nissan will replace the ABS actuator free of charge. However, Nissan has yet to released a timeline for the fix and owners might wait a long time before they get their Nissan Maxima back.
Luckily, there are no reports of injuries or death yet due to the Maxima and Murano fire. However, several property damages have been reported, including one Maxima owner's house all eaten up by the fire from the vehicle. We hope this will end soon as the Maxima is one of Nissan's top-selling models.
