Natalie Portman Starrer 'Jackie' Gets Fox Searchlight Pickup & Oscars Push

Natalie Portman has now entered the race for Oscars glory thanks to her performance as Jackie Kennedy in the biopic film "Jackie."

The film directed by Pablo Larrain first premiered at the Venice Film Festival without a proper distributor in place, until during the Toronto International Film Festival this week Fox Searchlight obtained the rights to distribute the film following an intense bidding war that began on Saturday night, according to Indiewire.

The studio intends to release the film in the United States this December, effectively turning the film about the aftermath of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy during next year's Oscars. "Jackie" won the award for best screenplay at the festival in Venice.

"I am delighted that Fox Searchlight will be releasing Jackie," Larrain said in a statement, according to USA Today. "Their movies have been an important influence on me as a filmmaker, and it is a personal achievement for me to have them bring this very special story of a beautiful, sophisticated and mysterious woman to the world. Jackie was the most unknown of the known women of the 20th century."

An official report as to how much Fox Searchlight had spent in acquiring the rights of "Jackie" was not disclosed. It had previously acquired a film out of the Sundance Film Festival for distribution, famously setting a record by paying $17.5 million for distribution rights of "The Birth of Nation" earlier this year.

"I never really thought of myself as a great imitator," Portman said while talking to reporters in Venice, according to CBS News. "I was just trying to get to something that people could get past and believe I was Jackie, and then you always have yourself in there too, inevitably."

Meanwhile, it is being reported that Portman is pregnant with her second child with husband Benjamin Millipied. They already have a five-year-old son together, Aleph.
