Porsche has enhanced the Panamera range with the new 4 E-Hybrid version which happens to be the most fuel-efficient of the new-generation Panameras while still being startlingly quick.
To begin with, power comes from a twin-turbocharged V6 petrol unit that churns out 330 hp and 331 lb.-ft. of torque and an electric motor that chip in with an additional 136 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of twist power. Both make for a combined power output of 462 hp and 516 lb.-ft. of torque.
All of the above figures conspire to makes the Panamera 4E Hybrid reach 62 mph from zero in 4.4 secs flat along with a top whack of 172 mph, Motor1 revealed. While it's true that it's a few precious moments less than the Panamera Turbo that does the same in 3.6 seconds, the Hybrid's figures still command respect.
Porsche stated that the vehicle's fuel efficiency is 113mpg along with CO2 emissions of 56g/km. The carmaker also stated the hybrid version will be able to make 31 miles on electric power alone, Motor1 reported. The 14.1-kWh liquid cooled Li-Io batteries can be charged in just three hours via a 240-volt charger.
Tesla fans might be tempted to compare the battery size with the Model S that has only recently been provided with a 100kWh battery pack option which makes the 0 - 60 mph sprint in just 2.5 seconds. However, the Model S is a pure electric zero-emission sedan while the Panamera 4E is a hybrid with a dual petrol and electric powertrain.
Meanwhile, Porsche also stated the new Panamera Hybrid is significantly different than the version it replaces. While having better looks and interior layout, another quality of the 4E Hybrid is the various driving modes it comes with that lets drivers choose how best to use the battery power.
Or as Top Gear mentioned, users would be better off letting the car's onboard system decide how best to use the hybrid power to maximize efficiency. With the previous Panamera Hybrid, it was only after the throttle is pressed more than 80 percent that the system would draw upon battery power.
The new 4E Hybrid is still expected to be cheaper than the outgoing version and is all set to make a splash at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.
