Faraday Future Re-Builds GM’s EV1 Team With The Former Chief Engineer Also Joining the Start-Up

Faraday Future has managed to convince GM's top electric propulsion expert Peter Savagian to join their company, Electrek reported. The move also stands confirmed now that it is reflected in the Linkedin profile page of Peter Savagian as well.

Savagian will be serving as the Vice President of Propulsion Engineering at Faraday Future where he will be heading the powertrain engineering operations.

This marks an important turn of events with the California based start-up that intends to launch several electric driven vehicles to the market. Savagian will be bringing along his huge experience spanning around 18 years in GM.

Savagian has been involved with GM's once famous EV1 programme where he served as the Chief Engineer for Traction and Thermal Systems. The veteran engineer has been the driving force behind GM's electric vehicle push and has been the General Director of the division.

However, for Savagian, the switchover will be like a homecoming of sorts since many of his former colleagues involved with the EV1 project are already serving at Faraday Future. Those include the likes of Silva Hiti, Young Mok Doo and Steven Schulz who are all developing the power electronics at Faraday.

As for the controversial EV1 project, it happens to be the first mass produced electric vehicle produced during the modern era, CarScoops reported. It also came at a time when the California Air Resources Board (CARB) made it mandatory for the US automakers to come up with zero emission vehicles if they wished to continue operating in California.

GM had then started producing the EV1 vehicles though those eager could only have them on lease. However, once automakers started legally challenging the CARB regulation, GM had then decided to withdraw all EV1s and destroyed them all. Only a few survived which have been exhibited at museums or educational institutes and will never be made road worthy ever again.
