Kia Eyes On Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Technology

Kia eyes development of a hydrogen fuel cell as a part of their goal to develop greener powertrains. In an event in Namyang, South Korea, Kia's Albert Biermann confirmed the said hydrogen fuel cell project. He said "Are we working on a Tesla fighter like everybody else? At this point, I can tell you: No, we are not working on it. But I would not exclude this for all times - when the time comes we can just do it. We have our own eco powertrain development centre, and we're also developing a hydrogen fuel cell car for the Kia side."

And thus the brand pushes for alternative fuels such as hydrogen due to the absence of powerful all-electric models to this date. Kia's sister company Hyundai, on the other hand had recently developed its ix35 Fuel Cell and thus experts expect Kia to utilize the same system applied by Hyundai.

For example, the said fuel cell could be housed inside the Kia Sportage, whose bigger size translates to more space to pack the fuel cell and batteries for its powertrain. Kia hydrogen fuel cell car is expected to be at par with the 359 miles and emissions of pure water in Hyundai's ix35. However, the biggest challenge for this technology both by Kia and Hyundai would be the lack of sufficient filling stations, with only a handful around UK.

Biermann referenced to the 2015 Volkswagen Dieselgate Scandal as a motivation for the development of this technology in their cars. He adds that with the current problems with diesel, the focus on hybrid for sustainable car is the way to go. Biermann's statement leads to concluding that both companies would no long use diesel in a performance context from their Kia GT or Hyundai N brands.
