James Bond Car Designer Honored

Ian Callum, the man who designed all the James Bond cars, received an honorary doctorate from the Glasgow School of Art.

Dumfries-born natives most prized catch design was the Aston Martin Vanquish, used in the movie "Die Another Day" and driven by Pierce Brosnan.

"Ian Callum is a man at the top of the game in automotive design," said Prof Seona Reid, Director of Glasgow School of Art.

Currently, the world class automotive designer is serving as a design director at Jaguar and is all set to launch the F-type model of the world class automaker which is the company's first two-seater convertible in the last 50 years.

"The years I spent at Glasgow School of Art were amongst the happiest and possibly the most creative time I can recall," Callum said after receiving his doctorate. "I am deeply honored to be receiving this award from an institution that means so much to me. I designed the Aston Martin Vanquish and ultimately it became part of the James Bond scene. He used it in one of his films and it was a great thrill to see it there.

"It kind of just reinforced the car's glamour and it was very thrilling indeed. I was at the opening of the film as well so it all felt very special. To see something you've designed and worked on not just as a car but something that's a focal point of the film industry is extremely exciting."

Appreciating his dedication and involvement for all these years in designing some of the rarest models in the world, Prof Reid said: "Ian had a seminal influence not only on the regeneration of Glasgow, but on the growth of the arts and creative industries in the city."
