In buying a car in the United States, one has to consider several factors apart from the cost of the vehicle. Other factors such as the car sales tax and title fees or the "one-time purchase costs", registration fees, car insurance, gas, and car maintenance costs or the "annual ownership and usage costs" need to be considered. According to the study by GOBankingRates.com, on the average car owners pay additional amount of $11,227 for three years considering the costs previously stated.

Here are the top 5 most expensive states in the U.S. to own a car.

5. Florida $13,211

The land of flowers enters the list coming in with $2,090 One-time purchase cost and belongs to the top 5 states with the most pricey cars. It average expenses reaching $13,000 dollars to own a car in three years. In Florida, one time and annual cost is higher.

4. New Jersey: $13,484

In NJ, owning a car for three years is $2,258 higher than the $11,227 national average. This is due to the higher average insurance premium cost of $1,905 and maintenance costs that is $422 on average.

3. District of Columbia: $13,561

Coming in at the 3rd spot is the United States capital where one-time purchase cost is not cheap, at $306 higher than the national average. Annual costs are also $676 higher than the national average this includes the $115 registration fee to $1,773 annual insurance cost and repairs that cost around $412 annually.

2. California: $14,452

The most populous state in the U.S. comes in at the 2nd spot where owning a car for three years is $3,225 higher than the nation's average. Also, California is 2nd to Hawaii in terms of high gas prices. Maintenance is pricier ($418) in California along with car insurance ($1,752).

1. Michigan: $15,315

The Great Lakes State where the Motor City Resides is the most expensive state to own a car. The cost to own a car in three years is $4,088 higher than the national average. Though Michigan has cheaper gas prices and cost of repair its insurance premiums is the highest that is $1,413 more than the national average.
