Tesla Meets 2015 Shipment Goal, Delivers More Than 50,000 Cars In One Year For The First Time

Tesla Motors announced Sunday that it delivered 50,580 vehicles in 2015, marking the first time that it ever sold over 50,000 vehicles in one year.

The achievement is in the low- to mid-range of the electric automaker's target for the year, which was to ship between 50,000 and 52,000 in 2015, according to Fortune.

The company added that it sold 17,400 cars in the fourth quarter of the year, which included 17,192 Model S sedans and 208 Model X SUVs. This was 75 percent more than the Model Ss that it sold in the same period in 2014 and 48 percent more than the amount sold in Q3 of 2015.

Tesla's total deliveries for 2015 were the most ever for the startup despite being on the low side of the target set in mid-2014, Business Insider reported. The original target was 55,000 vehicles, but the company brought that number down later on.

While Tesla was able to build 35,000 cars last year, it was unable deliver them all in the calendar year, and some deliveries were pushed to early 2015.

The automaker also made 507 Mode Xs in Q4 and plans on being able to build 238 of the SUVs per week, Fortune noted.

Selling in the target range is a big accomplishment for Tesla, as the company has been trying to increase Model S production while also producing Model Xs for the first time.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that the issue his company constantly faces is not with demand, but instead with being limited in how many cars it can produce, according to Business Insider.

Observers have said in the past few weeks that they were expecting Tesla to hit the low end of its goal.
