Hyundai Bringing CarPlay To Sonata In Q1 Of 2016

Hyundai Sonata owners who have been waiting for Apple's CarPlay software will finally get their wish in the first quarter of 2016.

The South Korean automaker has revealed that the 2015 Sonata will receive CarPlay early next year, following a year after it said that it would make the software available for the 2015 model, according to Engadget.

Owners who want to get their hands on the system will need to buy an SD card with new software first, despite Hyundai saying earlier that customers who bought 2015 and 2016 Sonatas with the proper equipment would be able to download it for free, USA Today reported.

"Hyundai and Apple are committed to delivering drivers the best possible experience while using CarPlay in their vehicles," Hyundai said in a statement. "We are currently working together to complete CarPlay integration."

Whether CarPlay will be available in 2016 Sonatas sold outside the U.S. or if the software will be backwards compatible with the 2015 model has yet to be revealed, MacRumors noted. Hyundai has also not said if CarPlay will be available for any of its other cars.

The software works with iPhone 5 or the latest running iOS 8 or above, uses Siri and is able to access common iPhone features safely while the user is driving by interfacing with the car's knobs, dials and buttons. Users will also have hands-free and eyes-free access to Maps, Phone, Messages, Music, Podcasts and third-party apps like Spotify, iHeartRadio, Rdio, CBS Radio and MLB At Bat.

Hyundai joins several automakers that have already added CarPlay to their 2016 vehicles as a standard feature or entertainment package upgrade, which include General Motors, Volkswagen and Honda.
