Porsche Brings 718 Name To New Boxster And Cayman

Porsche continues to show its love for numbers in its cars' names, having revealed that it will add "718" to its next generation Boxster roadster and Cayman sports car.

The new name is the latest announcement made for the upcoming Boxster and Cayman models, following the revelation that they will both be powered by mid-mounted turbocharged flat-four engines, according to CarBuzz.

The decision to use "718" is significant considering the name's history, as it was first used by a 1957 race car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1958. This vehicle, like the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, was powered by a flat-four.

"Whether it was at the 12-hour race in Sebring in 1960 or the European Hill Climb Championship which ran between 1958 and 1961, the Porsche 718 prevailed against numerous competitors with its powerful and efficient flat-four cylinder engine," Porsche said in a statement, according to Autoweek. "The 718 took first place between 1959 and 1960 at the legendary Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily."

The German automaker added that the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman "will share more similarities than ever before," Autoblog reported. The company is also switching up its current pricing strategy for the two models, as the new Boxster will cost more than the new Cayman.

While technical details about the two vehicles remain vague, an earlier report suggested that the engines will produce 240 horsepower in the base cars and 300 hp in the S models. The flat-flour engines have also been suggested to produce 370 hp in the GTS models.

Porsche will unveil the 2017 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman throughout 2016.
