BMW Introduces eRR Electric Motorcycle Concept (PHOTOS)

BMW is showing its commitment to the electric motor craze with the unveiling of a new motorcycle concept inspired by the S 1000 RR superbike.

The high-end electric sport bike, dubbed the eRR, serves as a battery-powered alternative to the S 1000 RR while drawing from its look and running gear, according to Gizmag.

BMW said that it wouldn't reveal technical details about the eRR until "a later date," but it added that the motorbike is aimed at helping the automaker find ways to power sports bikes with electricity.

"Since it's market launch the RR is giving the creeps to motorsport athletes," says Stephan Schaller, Head of BMW Motorrad. "In acceleration, handling or top speed the RR is setting standards. However, if acceleration on the first meters up to 50-60 km/h, is the point, the RR's 199 bhp have to admit defeat by another BMW product: the C evolution with its electric drive. We ask ourselves: What happens when combining a sport motorcycle and an electric drive? The experimental vehicle eRR brings the topic of zero emissions and electric drive to a new, fascinating level."

The eRR is the latest entry into BMW's collection of EVs, which includes the C Evolution scooter unveiled last year, as well as the i3 electric town car and the i8 sports car, Gas 2.0 reported.

While the debut of production version is uncertain, next week's EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy serves as a potential time for such an unveiling, Gizmag noted.

If BMW goes through with a production version, the eRR will have several competitors to contend with, including the Lightning LS-218 and the TT Zero.
