Hyundai To Launch Augmented Reality Owner's Manual App For Cars (PHOTOS)

Hyundai has joined the augmented reality (AR) craze, announcing Tuesday that it will launch an app later this year that will incorporate the technology with its owner's manuals.

The Hyundai Virtual Guide, an app available for both Android and iOS, will let drivers look at details about their cars by pointing a tablet or smartphone at different parts of the vehicle, which will bring up 2D and 3D overlays on the display, according to The Verge. Users will have 45 different parts in total to point at for looking at information.

The app, when launched, will be able to provide details about the air filter, engine oil and brake fluid, along with Bluetooth phone pairing, dynamic cruise and other in-car features. It will also include videos and guides alongside the AR overlays.

In addition, the technology will allow drivers to obtain information on repairs and maintenance, Engadget reported.

While Hyundai isn't the first automaker to debut an AR app, with Ferrari unveiling its own back in April, the South Korean automaker did say that it is the first mainstream car maker to do so for an owner's manual.

"The Virtual Guide is aimed at educating our owners on how to use the functions and features of their vehicle," said Frank Ferrara, executive vice president, customer satisfaction, Hyundai Motor America. "We modernized the idea of an owner's manual to provide the highest-quality user experience for the growing population of tech savvy consumers."

Hyundai added that the app will first be available for the 2015 Sonata, but it plans on adding it to other models soon after.
