Tesla's Software Update With Autopilot Coming This Week, Elon Musk Tweets

Elon Musk has some big plans for this week, having announced on Twitter Saturday that Tesla Motors would debut a software update for its Model S Thursday, Oct. 15.

The latest upgrade, dubbed Version 7, will introduce an Autopilot mode, a feature that fans of the electric car maker have been waiting a long time for (over a year, to be more precise), according to Electrek.

"Some exciting news this week: Tesla Version 7 software with Autopilot goes to wide release on Thursday!" Musk tweeted Saturday.

The announcement follows about two months after Tesla released the beta update to about 600-700 early access testers across the U.S. and in parts of Europe.

The upgrade will also provide some improvements to Tesla's Traffic Aware Cruise Control, such as allowing it to adjust automatically adjust to a car's speed and position by working with the auto-steer feature, Digital Trends reported.

Musk said that the update should be available to everyone in around five days.

The Model X SUV, which Tesla just started shipping in very limited volumes to its first customers, will also receive the new software, Fortune noted.

Musk's announcement also follows just days after he took some jabs at Apple, calling the company a "graveyard" for former Tesla employees.

"I don't hate Apple. It's a great company with a lot of talented people. I love their products and I'm glad they're doing an [electric vehicle]," he tweeted while backtracking on criticisms he made about the Apple Watch. "Jony [Ive] and his team created a beautiful design, but the functionality isn't compelling yet. By version 3, it will be."
