Mercedes-Benz Says Tesla Rival With 311-Mile Electric Range Coming 'Soon'

Mercedes-Benz plans to launch an electric car to rival Tesla Motors' Model S sedan, and it will reportedly have an electric range of 311 miles.

Thomas Weber, development boss for the German automaker, revealed the details of the project in an interview with Auto World Und Sport, saying that Mercedes will be able to scale the car's chassis to support several different models, according to Digital Trends. This presents the possibility of more Tesla competitors from the company in the future.

"We are working on an intelligent concept for a highly attractive electric vehicle with a range of [228-311 miles]," Weber said, adding that the vehicle will be available to drivers "soon."

Mercedes-Benz has been involved with Tesla in the past, being a former stakeholder in the electric car maker with a 9.1 percent ownership of the company in 2009. It also used Tesla's batteries for its B-Class Electric Drive before the two companies went their separate ways last year.

The Tesla rival is among several of Mercedes' EV projects, as the company is investing heavily in plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cells, Autoblog reported.

Other automakers stepping up to challenge Tesla include Audi with its electric SUV aimed at taking on the Model X, BMW with its i5 sedan, and Porsche with its electric Pajun.
