The Toyota Camry defeated the 2014 champion Ford F-150 in this year's "most American car" rankings.
An annual list is released by Cars.com revealing the "most American" cars. Last year's reigning champion Ford F-150 plummeted to the cellar, not even qualifying as eligible for the list.
The formula is simple. The AMI, or American-Made Index, makes its decision using three important factors: Overall vehicle sales, final assembly point and domestic-parts content, according to Wish TV. The magic number is 75 percent. That percentage pertains to domestic-made parts, as the rule of thumb to crack the list is that the car must have 75 percent of its parts made in North America.
American automobile production is on the rise, as 101 models are being assembled in this country for the 2015 year, according to Yahoo. What is startling is the decline in domestic-parts content. Twenty-nine cars were eligible for the AMI just five years ago. How many made the cut this year? A minuscule seven models were eligible for this year's list. That is the lowest number of cars since the inception of the list nine years ago, according to the Dallas Business Journal.
Cars.com conducted a survey, and the results showed that American car buyers want to purchase domestic made cars now more than ever. When shopping for a new car, 28 percent said they would only consider buying from an American automaker, Wish TV reports.
The Five-time champion Toyota Camry claims the number one spot for the first time since 2012. Here are the complete rankings from this year, all seven of them.
