Buick And GMC To Support CarPlay And Android Auto

Buick and GMC are the latest manufacturers to confirm their 2016 models will feature CarPlay and Android Auto.

Two-thousand sixteen model year Buick and GMC cars will feature both systems, however, CarPlay will be available for the Buick Regal and Lacrosse along with GMC's Yukon, Canyon and Sierra before Android Auto, UberGizmo.com reports.

CarPlay and Android Auto are infotainment systems that mirror your smart phone onto a built-in display in your car. Google's Android Auto is compatible with Android devices running on 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. Its counterpart CarPlay, a product of Apple, is compatible with iPhones 5, 5c, 5s, 6 and 6 Plus. The purpose of both systems is to enable drivers to use a mobile phone through the built-in display of the vehicle. Calls, texts, map guidance, music and more are all accessible through both CarPlay and Android Auto.

"CarPlay is a smarter, safer way to use your iPhone in the car," according to Apple.

CarPlay is supported by 38 car manufacturers, including Alpine and Pioneer, which offer CarPlay through an aftermarket system. Other apps are accessible using CarPlay such as Spotify, Beats Music, MLB At Bat and CBS Radio.

"With a simple and intuitive interface, integrated steering wheel controls, and powerful new voice actions, it's designed to minimize distraction so you can stay focused on the road," according to Android.

With Buick and GMC now on board, Android Auto now serves 37 car manufacturers. Android Auto is available in 11 different countries including the United States, Canada and Mexico.

With Buick and GMC just now arriving to the party, it might not be long before every manufacturer is on-board.
