Sorry Car Buyers: McLaren 540C Won't be Sold in The U.S.

We have some bad news McLaren fans: the 540C Coupe won't reach the U.S. after all.

When the British automaker unveiled the red and black ride last month most expected it would be sold in the states later this year. Now we're hearing otherwise, as Canada will be the only place in North America to get the sports car.

"We are undecided at the moment," McLaren spokesperson JP Canton said to Autoguide. "Essentially the car will be homologation for the U.S., but it is highly unlikely we will import it."

As we previously reported, the 540C comes with dihedral doors, a 533-horsepower 3.8-l twin-turbo engine and has a top speed of 199 mph.

More importantly the ride was expected to sell for around $165,000 in the U.S. which is much better than the $185,000 asking price for its Sports Series line mate, the McLaren 570S.

The 570S will be available for $219,750 in Canada and the 540C will have a $196,500 price tag, according to McLaren. The automaker has started taking orders for both rides and deliveries are expected to start sometime in November 2015.

McLaren expects annual sales to increase from 1,600 rides this year to 4,000 by 2017. They might have some trouble reaching that goal without offering a more reasonably priced ride in the U.S.
