GM to Invest in New Chevrolet Corvette Paint Shop

Those who fantasize about owning a new Chevrolet Corvette in Laguna Blue or Shark Gray tintcoat will be happy to know General Motors is investing big time in a new paint shop.

The Detroit automaker will build a new 450,000 sq.-ft. facility as part of a $439 million investment to improve its Bowling Green, K.Y. factory, according to General MotorsGM set aside $5.4 billion to update a number of its production facilities in the U.S. this year.

"The Corvette is one of Kentucky's most-cherished icons," said. Lt. Gov. Crit Luallen in a press statement. "Such a significant expansion of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant will help the company remain competitive in the region and around the world."

The plant will feature FANUC robots that will help save 25 percent of paint used, a new Dry Scrubber Booth to eliminate sludge water and waste and more efficient baking ovens for paint finish.

Since 2011, GM has invested $135 million in its Bowling Green plant to improve Corvette Stingray production and to move its Performance Build Center.

"With this major technology investment, we can continue to exceed the expectations of sports car buyers for years to come," said North American Manufacturing Manager Arvin Jones in a press statement.

Construction will begin this summer and take about two years to complete though it won't affect Corvette production.
