Is Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne looking to team up with Apple or Google to make a self-driving car?

That could certainly be the case, as Marchionne met with Apple head Tim Cook recently during Marchionne's California road trip, which also included meetings with Google and Tesla executives.

While talking with reporters at a Toronto-based Maserati dealership, Marchionne said that Cook is planning an "intervention" in the automotive industry though he wouldn't explain what that meant exactly.

"He's interested in Apple's intervention in the car, that's his role," said Marchionne of Cook, according to Reuters.

Even though it's been widely reported that Apple is working on a self-driving car, the Cupertino-based company still won't confirm anything publicly yet.

So far, the only Apple project that has to do with cars is "CarPlay," which Cook has said will reach all major automakers, and at least 40 different vehicles, in 2015.

The iPhone company has also secured some interesting patents as of late and is looking for iOS Car Service employees to work on another automotive venture called "Project Titan."

A number of automakers have been linked to Apple and to Google, who has not shied away from the fact that they're working on a self-driving car.

Marchionne got a chance to test out Google's self-driving car prototype for 45 minutes last week though he did not tell reporters how the ride went, according to Reuters.

He did have high praise for popular Tesla CEO Elon Musk after meeting with him last week, however.

"I'm incredibly impressed with what that kid has done," he said about Musk.

Marchionne has made it known he wants to consolidate the auto industry to try increasing profitability though he hasn't been successful during discussions with the likes of General Motors and Ford.
