Idris Elba Sets UK 'Flying Land' Speed Record in a Bentley

It takes a lot of courage and dedication to be an actor. Committing to a part requires going to extremes you never thought you could reach but doing so anyway to give audiences around the world a performance they'll never forget.

It takes even more guts and dedication to try setting a new "Flying Land" speed record, but that's exactly what "Luther" star Idris Elba did recently on the beach of Pendine Sands, Wales.

Elba clearly showed what he's made of by not only attempting to break Sir Malcolm Campbells land speed record but destroying the 1927 mark, according to Bentley.

Elba, also known for his roles in "The Office" and "Thor," took down the 88-year-old record after achieving an 180.361 mph top speed driving a new Continental GT Speed.

The two-door car is powered by a 626-hp 12-cylinder engine with a top-speed of 206 mph, according to the automaker. What makes the record even sweeter is Elba rode a production model with no customizations for an extra boost.

"I'm absolutely elated to have broken the 'Flying Mile' at Pendine Sands," said Elba, according to Bentley. "It's an honor to have taken on the challenge, and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell."

Malcolm set the 174.8 mph pace nearly 90 years ago while driving his Napier-Campbell Blue Bird.

The "Flying-Land" attempt took place during filming for a four-part Discovery Channel series called "Idris Elba: No Limits" set to debut this July.
