2016 Ford F-150 Will Offer CNG, Propane Options (PHOTOS)

Ford announced some news today during the Alternative Clean Transportation Expo in Dallas that will make environmentalists around the world pretty happy.

The upcoming 2016 Ford F-150 pickup will be sold with an optional 5.0-liter V8 engine capable of running on propane or natural gas.

While Ford was short on specs, here's what we know so far about the truck:

What is it?

In a nutshell, car buyers will have the chance to choose a "gaseous-fuel prep" option to make their trucks run on either propane or compressed natural gas. This would make the vehicle the only pickup available of running on propane or CNG.

Ford is saying there won't be a diesel option for 2016, as they feel the EcoBoost engine is "a better value," according to Edmunds.

What we like:

The F-150 trucks running on propane or CNG will be able to tow the same weight as if they were running on gas. That remains to be seen, but if they can that would be a huge win for the environment and the Detroit automaker.

What's new?

The new F-150s will be able to haul "hundreds of pounds more" than the 2014 variation since Ford used light-weight materials to put its new trucks together. Having a 5.0-liter V8 instead of a 3.7-liter V6 also doesn't hurt.

Can I buy it?

You can't buy the 2016 F-150 yet, but you will be able to this summer. Trucks are expected to reach dealerships sometime next winter, probably just in time for Christmas.

Factory CNG/propane engine-prep options go for $315, according to Ford. Buyers also have to choose a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to get their fuel tanks, fuel injectors and fuel lines, which costs around $7,500 to $9,500.
