Can the Outlander SUV Save Mitsubishi?

Deep in the northern annex of the Javits Center, saddled with a last-pick press conference time nearing the end of the second press day of the New York International Auto Show, Japanese automaker Mitsubishi appeared to have drawn the shortest straw.

But, unlike some automakers that featured prominently but had no new wares to show, like Acura and Alfa Romeo, Mitsubishi earned its share of voice at the New York auto show with the 2016 Outlander refresh.

We don't often focus on the press conference being the most important part of an automaker's presence at a car show, but on this occasion, the media witnessed hope and promise as evinced from Mitsubishi's executives. Proud of the Outlander's Montero-like nose and improvements inside and out, Mitsubishi formally invited everyone in the room for a more thorough inspection of their product—as if to say, "Try us."

We're intrigued by the notion of a refreshed Outlander, as the brand's core product lineup has shrunk to several models: the Mirage subcompact, and the Outlander Sport and Outlander SUVs.

The space occupied by Mitsubishi this year is a former haunt of General Motors, which moved its stands closer to European luxury and Japanese automakers on the main floor.
