2016 Hyundai Tucson Debuts in New York: 2015 New York International Auto Show

After revealing the 2016 Hyundai Tucson to the world for the first time earlier this month at the Geneva Motor Show, the Korean crossover sport-utility vehicle has hit the shores of New York City. From a cursory view, here's what we like about the 2016 Tucson:

  • Blocky: The Tucson carries over the styling of the model shown in Geneva, which means that the soft lines of the current model are replaced by blocky lines with soft edges. We like the strong presence of the SUV that now has the looks of a mini-Santa Fe.
  • Savvy: The crossover segment is getting smarter, and the Tucson follows suit. An 8-inch touchscreen display is among the largest in its class, offering navigation functionality and integrated media streaming apps. (A 5-inch touchscreen display is standard on all models.) A neat, hands-and-legs-free method of opening the tailgate requires proximity and the key fob.
  • Plucky: For the first time, the Tucson will be offered with two advanced engines: a 2.0-liter, 164-hp four-cylinder, and a 1.6-liter turbo good for 175 horsepower. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission debuts with the latter engine, and the powertrain replaces the outgoing 2.4-liter four. We can't wait to find out how that power translates in the real world.

Come back for on-the-floor photos as soon as we can snap them.

Our take: The Hyundai lineup is further evolving, and this could be the volume model to lead the charge.
