2016 Camaro Details: 70 Percent of Parts Are Brand-New

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro won't be unveiled until May, but that hasn't stopped the automaker from providing a few details to get potential buyers excited.

The vehicle will be a completely new car compared to its Gen 5 Camaro predecessor, with only the bowtie emblem on the tail lamp panel and the SS badge remaining.

GM confirmed this week that the Gen 6 Camaro was designed based on the award-winning Alpha architecture. The team sought to make the most of each component in order to create a successor to the best-selling Gen 5.

"Our global engineering team is incredibly passionate about Camaro, and they sweated all the details to make Gen 6 the best Camaro we could possibly put into the hands of our customers," said Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development, according to GM.

The front structure was lengthened to create the dash-to-axle ratio needed for the vehicle's iconic profile. It was also widened to make it a desired and stable vehicle on the track, according to GM.

Approximately 20 percent of the 6.2L LT1 V-8 engine was designed to fit the Camaro's packaging, like new "tri-Y"-style exhaust manifolds.

"Alpha provided a strong foundation, but more than 70 percent of the components are unique to the Gen 6 Camaro, including exterior and interior dimensions, an all-new interior, front and rear suspension, and powertrain components," Reuss said in a statement. "The minute you see - and hear - the Gen 6, you know it's a Camaro, from the stance to the driving experience to the sound of the Small Block V-8."

GM has provided little details on the new car, nor has the automaker said how much the Gen 6 Camaro will go for or an exact release date.

The 2016 Chevy Camaro will be officially unveiled on May 16 during a public event at Detroit's Belle Isle park, home to the Chevrolet Detroit Bell Isle Grand Prix.

The event is free to the public, but space will be limited and registration is required, according to GM.

Visit the Camaro Six website to register and receive more information on the event. A link to download the "sound" of Camaro Six to your Apple, Android or Windows phone is available on the website as well.
